Olivia ❤s Maxi

Maxi skirts, that is. I found this batik gem from the 70's in my basement — yes, I delved into the Big Cardboard Box of Amazing Vintage Clothes again. This particular skirt was my grandmother's and it is my new favorite skirt.

I must admit, I was hesitant to try the maxi skirt trend. Too Little-House-on-the-Prairie, I said. Too grandmotherish, I said. Too weird, I said.

But here I was, feeling 70's-ish and reveling in the bohemian vibe of my new Goodwill hat (99¢). So I tried on the skirt... and fell in love.

It is SO comfortable. So fun to walk in — all flowy and floaty out behind me. (Did I mention it's a wrap-around, too?) So fun to sit in — it drapes in the most epic way around any chair in the world (like below). And oh, so fun to go down stairs in. I feel like Cinderella in a long skirt.

skirt: vintage 1970s // top: Abercrombie & Fitch // hat: Goodwill // sweater: Aeropostale // shoes: Goodwill // scarf: vintage

Okay. I just really needed to share my excitement. If you have a maxi skirt and have been putting off wearing it, please stop doing that. Now. It is themostamazingtrendintheworld.

Rant over. Now I must go to sleep... good night! I can promise a lovely video for you tomorrow; I spent a good deal of time singing and strumming with my friend Sam yesterday. I'll leave you to wonder what on earth non-musical Olivia means until tomorrow. *winks*

{PS- have you been voting?}

  2. Oh my gosh, I think I'm in love! Oh how I would love love love a skirt like that. You are so very lucky to have a vintage gold-mine in your basement. I guess I know where I should start shopping!
Old-fashioned type outfits, with a modern flair are SO my style now, and one of these long flow-y skirts would fit the bill perfectly.

But, don't shy away from Little House on the Prairie. Yes, maybe you want to avoid the poor country look, but the show is just awesome epic-ness.

  3. For some reason maxi dresses/skirts have always bugged me but you've inspired me to give them another chance this spring/summer. That's quadruple cute!

  4. I really like the skirt on you, but I don't think it would really work on me (I have short spiked hair and I'm more into skirts that you can see tights with).
Yes I have been voting! You're in the lead so far!

  7. This looks great! The best thing about the current maxi trend is that they are so easy to find in thrift stores and just bring in the waist a bit. The splash of orange at your waist looks really good and really highlights the orange in the hat.

  8. Mary Catherine: I thought they were too hippie or too frumpy but they are truly amazing. This photo is what turned me around: http://www.chictopia.com/photo/show/396785-Josefin-blue-denim-jacket-maxi-skirt
    Definitely not frumpy.

Charlotte: Au contraire, I think you'd totally rock a maxi skirt with your short hair. You have a pixie cut? Check out this girl, she is amazing and does great things with her hair short: http://www.chictopia.com/ninepianos

Laura Isabelle: Generations of stylish women, lol. The Box has everything from my great-great-grandmother's furs to my great-grandmother's sparkly stuff to my grandmother's sixties stuff to my mother's eighties and nineties stuff. I think that the clothes span over about a hundred years. All these are on my mother's side of the family... I've yet to find a Box from my father's side.

  9. Ooh, I love it! ^.^ It looks very gypsy-ish, like that other outfit you pieced together. But at the same time, it's a totally different look with a completely different feel. Anyhow, I love it! Very spunky.

P.S. I was wondering if you could do another post on 'finding your style', 'cause I'm still kind of looking for mine...*sheepish grin*

  10. I must admit, dear, I would never be brave enough to wear a maxi out in public (rock on!) yet the maxi skirt trend is still gripping me. They're so easy to find - pop on over to your local Goodwill/thrift shop and you'll discover one. :)

Your hat & scarf really give a blue and white outfit a splash of color, and a tight cardigan is best worn with something loose and flared - like a maxi!

  16. You're so adorable:) Maxi skirts are gorgeous! I love the natural look of them. I have one but, sadly, because of the colors it does not work in February. How long till spring and those priceless bright colors?
